Booze by Design - Mateo & Bernabé Mateo 21
Mateo & Bernabé is the first craft brewery in the region of La Rioja in Northern Spain. This region is know far more for their wine than any type of beer. Mateo is a wheat beer that tastes fresh. There are subtle and balanced notes of fruit, typical to many wheat beers. I'm sometimes wary of wheat beers from craft breweries in America, rarely finding one I enjoy, but there is something about European wheats that are done just right.
They wanted to keep their labels simple and iconic and that was done very successfully. Each label has a bold number which represents a holiday in the region. The 21 on this wheat beer represents the beginning of the wine harvest on the 21st of September. The Spanish design studio Moruba created the labels. The design is simple, bold and represents the history of La Rioja.
